Self control: something I apparently do not possess

by debraatuow

It’s always the dang ice cream in a lid with strawberry sauce.

Or caramel.

It’s just 80 cents!

You are delicious and horrifying at the same time.

I woke up with approximately six hours sleep under my belt. I cooked breakfast at 1pm; eggs, bacon, kale, and garlic mushrooms. Upon eating it I remember why I skipped breakfast daily. I hate the food. I eat half of it and shamelessly empty the rest into the bin.

I go about my day, talking, walking, and paying $15 library fines for late returns. The meal I planned on cooking last night, but never got around to, is what I enjoyed for dinner this evening – a delightful fish curry.

750g firm white fish, diced into 2cm chunks
small red chilli, sliced
1tbsp lime juice
salt
oil
1 onion, sliced
1 tbsp grated ginger
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tbsp mild curry paste (I used Panang, but you could use any other)
1 x 140ml can coconut cream
1/2 cup coriander leaves
1 lime, cut into wedges

Toss fish in chilli, lime juice and salt.

Heat a frypan over medium-high heat. Add a bit of oil and cook the onion, stirring, for 4-5 minutes. Add ginger, garlic and curry paste and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring until fragrant. Then add the coconut cream and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer until sauce thickens slightly. Add the fish and cook, covered, for 3-4 minutes or until just cooked through.

Sprinkle with coriander, serve with lemon wedges and rice if desired.

After the usual Wednesday rehearsals, the rushed de-clothing, hanging, folding, the shivering, sneezing, sniffling, and simple hustle-bustle of the dressing room, I head off to a cute cocktail bar in town which I had always desired to go but never did. It was just as hipster as I expected and with prices to match.

There, I had sweet potato fries with aioli. Aioli is food of the gods. I also ordered a pub squash, which was half a can of Solo. I noticed that it was half the can, so I asked for the rest, which the bartender reluctantly handed over. I got the impression he had never been asked for the rest of the can before.

Late night drives with friends always provoke Maccas cravings. We stopped and got ice cream. I got ice cream in a lid with strawberry sauce. It was delightful, yet terrible.

I: “I wonder how much sugar is in this”

D: “I don’t want to know”.
